commercialized cafe

made on may 17, 2025

the internet, or at least what i would think is the core of the modern internet, is what i would like to call a commercialized cafe. we all thrive and connect on a platform that also tries to sell our own body parts every minute to one another (or at least the big parts of the internet do).

almost everything we see on most websites are fueled by algorithms and advertisements. and by most websites, i mean the big platforms on the internet that are the most profitable. if you like this post, you might like this post, and so on and so forth until you decide to go gambling. this might be amazing for whoever is getting rich off of the exploitation of the end user, but for the end user, they're stuck in this endless hell of scrolling and looking for numerous posts that they probably could give less of a fuck about, irregardless of what they're into. that or they're in a constant state of euphoria because of the endless scrolling and pseudo-vibrancy of such content that they're being spoonfed.

typically, people brush this kind of engagement off as "oh, but this is how big corpo makes money for their platform. if whatever you're using is free, you're the product!", and while in some regards that is true, it also softens the fact that this kind of mentality is what breaks people to try and become free of the shackles of being bombarded with the same ad for cunt wars every single time.

i remember seeing something about this, and if i could find it one day that would be amazing, but basically there was this article or piece of info i read or heard of that said using adblockers is quite literally one of the only ways to stay truly safe on the internet. and i think that statement (or at least the generalized idea behind it) is becoming a much more darker reality every single day. you don't really know what kind of chicanery people put on advertisements, and so people are able to get away with not only putting inappropriate content on ads (maybe my least concern here but something more or less contradictory to something google stands for), but also people can essentially take control of an end user's entire personal info all because of one single advertisement and a bunch of social engineering.

i probably would say some shit like "just get a website and use neocities as your platform for finding new people", or maybe something more thoughtful. however, i know not everyone has the money to (or even the interest if money doesn't matter) in doing something like that. my only real suggestion is that you should probably find a way to block ads. it's definitely a lot easier to do on a computer, but as for mobile devices, i'd say it would become more of a challenge.
